Samhain is one of the most significant celebrations in the witch’s calendar. This ancient holiday, often associated with Halloween, holds a special place in our hearts and traditions. As we explore Samhain, we’ll uncover the rich tapestry of rituals and customs that make this season so enchanting.
Samhain: A Time of Transition
Samhain, pronounced “SOW-in,” is a sacred time on the witch’s wheel of the year. It marks the end of the bright half of the year and the beginning of winter. The veil between our world and the spirit world is at its thinnest during this time, allowing us to connect with our ancestors and otherworldly beings. Contrary to the popular belief that the new year starts in January, for witches, it begins on November 1, the day after Samhain.
Bonfires and Their Traditions
Samhain is celebrated with bonfires, an essential element of this fire festival. Traditionally, these fires are lit at sunset, preferably on the top of a hill, although not all regions are blessed with hills. In such cases, the bonfires are kindled at the heart of the community. The significant custom is that each member of the community takes an ember from the bonfire to light their own hearth, thus carrying the communal “need fire” into their homes. However, for witches, it’s vital to avoid bonfires on hilltops, as they are often kindled to ward off witches and other malevolent spirits.
The Sacred Transition
Samhain marks a sacred transition between two seasons, reflecting the natural world’s shift. Leaves fall, trees and plants wither, and nature mirrors the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. In this season of death, winter becomes a time of passing, with many people succumbing in spring. It’s a time when the ancients believed you could divine future events, particularly who within your community would pass away.
Divination: A Core of Halloween
Divination plays a crucial role in Samhain celebrations. This is a time when the barrier between worlds is thinnest, making it perfect for divining the future. The most common methods include scrying bowls, crystal balls, tarot cards, and water scrying using a Venusian copper bowl filled with water to reveal glimpses of what’s to come.
Midnight Hauntings and Superstitions
Numerous superstitions surround Samhain and its eerie midnight hauntings. It was believed that the souls of those destined to pass away would race through bullways or crossroads at the stroke of midnight on Halloween. Interested in knowing who’s fated to depart in the coming months? Stand at your local parish church’s porch or at a crossroads to witness the passing spirits of your community. But for those who find such knowledge unsettling, divining your future partner may be more appealing.
The Midnight Apple Ritual
One of the most famous traditional witchcraft spells performed on Halloween is the Midnight Apple Ritual. At midnight, sit in front of a candle-lit mirror, brush your hair while eating an apple, and gaze into the mirror. This is said to reveal the vision of your future partner. However, be cautious, for it could also reveal the devil, signifying impending misfortune. Apples are deeply connected to Samhain and are often referred to as the “food of the dead.”

Offering Apples to the Ancestors
A longstanding tradition is to leave apples on your doorstep or altar as an offering to the spirits and ancestors. The following morning, if the apples remain untouched, it signifies that the dead have taken the spiritual energy from the apples, rendering them useless. In this case, they should be disposed of in the compost or another appropriate place.
Samhain, a time of magic and mystery, bridges the divide between the living and the dead. It’s a season when we pay homage to our ancestors, divine the future, and celebrate life and death. Rich in traditions and steeped in history, Samhain offers us a glimpse into the mystical world of witches and their connection with the spirit realm.
As the seasons shift, the spirits emerge, and we revel in the enchantment of this age-old celebration. If you’re curious to learn come and follow my on Youtube or Patreon.
